I know equine anatomy is different than human anatomy, so Jackie would be the one with the correct answer if she chimes in, plus I'm sure he was being juiced with something different than I was...
But when I was being juiced last summer, I could literally feel a difference in the intensity of the side effects with every decrease in my dose - starting the day the doc told me to cut down a pill. It took maybe a week after I was off the stuff to feel as though I'd never been on it in the first place - and the weight loss began just as quickly.
It may have still been working it's way out of my system, but knowing how aware I was that I was on it, it couldn't have been more than miniscule traces at that point, and well on it's way out.
Rereading that though, "stimulate the appetite", shit, maybe he was on the same stuff I was. :lol By the time I got out of the hospital, I was telling the nurses they couldn't juice me unless they brought a pizza with the syringe, because it was cruel and unusual punishment not to.
Da-yam! My only experience with steroids was prednisone, and while I wasn't on it long enough to get the food cravings and weight gain, I did get a dose of the insomnia and sweats. I just felt HOT after taking that stuff. And I'm cold-blooded, so that was a weird sensation for me. I have no idea what sort of dosage BB got, but I think he'll be a better, healthier horse to be off the stuff, even if he isn't as fast.
I was on Pred too - but a super high dose (120mg a day is not 'normal', but since I'd waited so long to figure out what was going on with my health, it had to be treated aggressively) for a month before I was tapered off it over the next two months), plus they were pumping the shit right into my veins in the hospital, so the side effects kicked in pretty quick.
By the same token, line up the Kentucky Derby and Preakness fields again and Big Brown might not even place. That's the great thing about racing - so many different factors!
I'm glad he's not hurt, but I do hope this maybe knocked some humility into Dutrow. The thing that gets me the most is he knows how many near-misses we've had (three years in a row in the 90's!) yet he was shooting off like BB is the best thing since sliced bread. I'll concede he's a good horse, but it's not like he turned in a 31-length victory or anything. His two wins looked remarkably like any win you'd see on any racetrack on any day. Nothing really that dominating about them.
What the vet that I talked to said was that Winstrol is used to promote the appetite and increase the levels of oxyagen in the blood, usually. Now, he also said that most of the time the amount used is low enough that it's just like any supplement-- it helps the horse and keeps the horse looking good and in good shape.
That said? Brown was NOT the horse yesterday that he was in the Preakness. It could have been the track-- they did not water the track, it was deep and cuppy, not the usual Belmont surface. (Here's hoping they fix that ASAP.) It could have been the steroids. It is hard to tell, and I hope that they'll give him a break and take care of him.
There are different kinds of steroids--the big ones being glucocortocoids (like pred) which are in and out of our system pretty quickly and there are the anabolics like Winstrol. I have not used Winstrol in a looong time, but when I did it was to try and get cats in renal failure to eat better and to maintain lean muscle mass. We have better things to do this now. IIRC< Winstrol is alos a controlled drug whereas the glucocorts are not. Its an injectable and is in some sort of depot form--I gave it to cats once a week or so, I'd imagine it would be gone in a month.

Then we get to see him run again! *GLEE!*
