[It had been a long fight, made even longer by the fact that he had been fighting against himself for most of it. The Innocence had started to make his hands burn so badly because of Joyd's beating at the mental walls he had put up, Lavi had had to pause to wrap his hands with his torn shirt so that the blood wouldn't make him lose his grip and the skin wouldn't smoke anymore. He knew the improvised bandaging wouldn't last long and it hadn't.

As soon as he had come face to face with Tyki he was struggling once again to keep a hold of his Innocence and keep a hold of Joyd while holding his ground. Something had to give.

And then something did.

Tyki had gotten through his guard when Tettsui had been knocked out of one hand, the cloth slipping from it and making it impossible to hold the weapon again. Then there had been a hand through his chest just under his heart, disrupting his whole body as it missed his spine, piercing him.

"I'll take back what's mine, boy." And there was an emptiness in his head as he had fallen, Joyd had gone

Lavi! [Panic. That was the only thing going through Kanda's mind. And regret. He regretted that he was absorbed in his fight so much he had forgotten about Lavi. He should have been there for him. He should have protected him, like he said he would. He was afraid of losing him. Kanda couldn't follow him if Lavi died. Well, he could, but he'd only come back to life thanks to his curse.

It wasn't fair.

Kanda shoved away the nurses that tried to get him to get back into bed; he didn't care if he had been badly injured during the fight, his injuries were already healing anyway.

Lavi was more important than his own well being.]

[That's the way it was on the battlefield, Lavi certainly didn't blame him for concentrating on keeping himself alive. Really that's what he'd prefer to happen in the long run, Kanda had to live. He had that important person to find. What did a temporary romance matter compared to his life's mission?

Lavi slowly opens his eyes, the patch taken off by nurses, his breathing is ragged as he tries to focus on whomever it is calling his name. Suddenly his memory returns as he realizes where he is if not how badly he's injured. It all just seems like a bad dream after all. The redhead tries to sit up, tries to swing his legs over and go to Kanda.] Yu...!

[A rough gasp, a shot of pain makes him cry out and fall back into the bed the nurses are trying to keep him in. He's made himself bleed again after they had just gotten it to stop for a while.]

I want...to see...Yu! [Fumbling and reaching past all the bodies and tubes, trying to grab his hand even if he's far away.]

[He'll still feel guilty, just like Allen always feels guilty that he couldn't keep everyone safe from harm. That's just who he's slowly changed into.

Kanda shoves the nurses holding onto him away, half-running and half-stumbling to Lavi's bedside, taking his outstretched hand in both of his.]

[They might be able to save him in modern times but this is the turn of the century, medical practice is still so far behind. At least they have the morphine to keep him so blind from the pain.

They're the two worst patients to have in the ward, the nurses trying to get Kanda out of the way and back into bed. But after a while they'll relent and push two beds together so Kanda can at least rest as well.

Giving a pained grin, one so tired.] You're...alive... [He lets go of Kanda's hand for a moment to cup his cheek, thumb brushing over his bottom lip.] I'm glad...I got to...see Yu...before... [Trailing off, not wanting to say it. But he's not stupid, he knows he's dying.] Joyd...is gone... Tyki...took him...back.

[Ignoring the IV tied to him and just moves closer to Lavi, leaning into his hand, reaching up to place his own over it. Tearing up, just a little.] Idiot, of course I'm alive.

[Keeping his hand there though the effort is visibly tiring him out, he didn't want to go out this way but it seems like he is anyway. Lavi's smile grows a little, mouth quirking in the corners.] Death...can't take...the stubborn ones...

[His eyes soften a little.] Just...having you...here. Alive...helps...

[Scooting closer when he sees that it's tiring him out. And sob, don't say things like that, you're gonna make him cry ;; Blinking back the tears now.]

[Lavi shifts his hand down on the bed, Kanda can lay on it, it doesn't have any IV tubes in it. And he has to say it, has to say it now because he won't get a chance to later.]

L-Lavi! [Yanks his IV out and just gets as close as he can, tearing up again. Just wrapping his arms around him carefully.]

[Slowly puts his trembling arm around his back, face hidden in Kanda's hair.]
