Perhaps it was the chill that caused him to shiver and wake a little that drew him close enough to the surface of consciousness that when Todd called out softly, Neil's eyes snapped open.
He lay still for a moment but then something prompted him to look over to the face nestled close to his on the pillow. Reaching up, slender fingers touched Todd's cheekbone gently and Neil whispered.
"Todd?"
He wasn't sure his lover was awake but he was certain he'd heard Todd call his name.
Todd blinked his eyes open, and started for a second, thinking he was still dreaming. Then, he relaxed, and placed his arms out to hug Neil tightly, burrowing his head into his lover's shoulder.
Neil's arms immediately reached out to wrap around Todd and the lanky youngster pulled his lover comfortably into his embrace, curling his body around the smaller boy protectively. He knew that Todd still tended to have the bad dreams, that beautiful sensitive soul of his leaving him vulnerable to shades of 'what had been' and 'what might be'. Neil tried to hold him close, tried to let his physical warmth and loving arms chase away any possible shadows.
Shades were right. Literally. "I'm so glad you're here, Neil." He mumbled into Neil's shoulder, shuddering a little as tears wetted the pale skin. "You chose the right path."
