If you haven't already, I totally recommend reading his earlier book, Liar's Poker--where the whole concept of derivatives got born in the 80's. That's the one I read in the teeth of the meltdown.

I feel like I have the big picture pretty straight in my head - as you explained it. I may, or may not read the book at some point.
That phrase, though, "I'm shorting your house," it speaks volumes to me about a conversation I've tried to have over the years with callous carnivores, 'players' in the dating game, gamblers, and so on. It comes down to "what if it was *your* kid that I was throwing under the bus? Can we just monetize the risk on that?"
