"Did you say something?" Kirin looked up from tying the laces of his black and white high-top sneakers with neon pink shoelaces. "Last thing I remember you saying was that if I was going to go out I had to wear layers because of the lack of cloud cover, and this is layered."
He disappeared into the closet and returned with a jacket and hat. "See? Even more layered."
"A tarp? Isn't that what you use to cover the farm equipment in bad weather?" Kirin pouted and shuffled his way over to the bed. "You promised me shopping today, I'll even try on a poncho or flannel if it'll make you happy."
There was clearly a 'but' hanging with Kirin's statement. He liked what he was wearing. He had discovered that black and hot pink looked good on him, and got a little carried away with a few styling choices, but it wasn't that bad.
"I'm wearing mostly black anyway." It was the bright neon pink accents that was the point of contention. And possibly the rhinestones on the hat.
"So?" Kirin grasped Jamie's waved hand and tried to pull the boy from the bed. "I don't see what the problem is with wearing clothes that fit me. You said t-shirts and jeans, I'm wearing t-shirts and jeans. And I bought these at the mall here. Stop being stubborn."

"Can't we just get you a poncho?" he complained, voice muffled. "Or a tarp? I have some nice, old-fashioned, trusty flannel."

He waved a hand abstractly.
"This is Kansas."
