The 3rd Season starts tonight

I'd originally intended a really long post but I just don't have it in me for some reason. This may be fairly long in itself but I'll try and keep it fairly brief too.

Before this new series of Battlestar Galactica originally started I put together a review, not too dissimilar from my Inconsistancies posts, based on the number of rumors I heard ( Read more... )

bsg, caprica, battlestar galactica, humans, battlestar pegasus, season 3, cylons

The original Cylons were a reptilian species that gradually incoporated technology into themselves (Borg much?)
They pre-date the Borg by quite a few years. I think the Cybermen came before the Cylons, though.
Part of the reason this new series has an edge over the old one is it is at once futuristic and not at the same time.
And they came up with a great rationale for doing that. The rest of their society was more advanced and high-tech; but the Galactica (in addition to being very old to begin with) was deliberately made and maintained with lower-tech to protect it from Cylon cyberwarfare.
Their ships pilot themselves as they are another form of Cylon
It makes no sense to have robots pilot a ship, as opposed to putting a brain directly in the ship.
The humanform Cylons are particularly interesting.
Just about the only development from "Galactica 1980" that was kept (and was worth keeping … please, no flying motorcycles!)
In the original series there were Humans littered all over the bloody place, supposedly lending credit to the ( ... )

Took me a sec to remember who Ibley was. They'd have to revamp him something fierce considering where from original Baltar recognized the guy's voice.

They'd be revamping him something fierce in any case.

But since the humans in the new BSG have a polytheistic religion, it would be a easy for them to see him as an avatar of one of the many gods/demigods/whatever.

I was psyched as soon as I found out the Pegasus was going to make an appearance. I love seeing how they take different elements from the original and re-make them according to the new series' philosophy.
You go, boy. To me, the joy in a reenvision - of BSG, of the King Arthur legends, of Star Trek when it happens (and it shall happen, even if the rumors are wrong and that's not what's up this time) - is equal or greater to the joy in a sequel.

The Original BSG Was Based In Part On Mormonism allah_sulu October 6 2006, 19:05:14 UTC
The Cylons are monotheists, their religion is disturbingly Christian.
I haven't finished watching season two yet, but I don't recall seeing anything "disturbingly Christian" about the Cylon religion. There have been many other monotheistic religions, y'know. Let's see …
  • I don't recall any mention of a counterpart to God (Satan, or whatever) being mentioned by the Cylons. Not every Christian sect acknowledges Satan as a literal being, but the more "disturbing" ones certainly do. Zoroastrianism, one of the earliest non-Judeo-Christian-Islamic monotheist religions, definitely has a large focus on a "devil" competing with their "god".
  • The Cylons don't appear to be particularly evangelical, either - Christians would try to convert their enemies (humans) before trying to destroy them, but the Cylons haven't made any efforts in that direction (other than the conversations with Baltar). Even Muslims are supposed to invite the enemy to convert before killing them.
  • Although they talk about God, and events in the past, the Cylons don't mention ( ... )

I never really watched the original much (though my little sister remembers watching it). She's the one who got me so hooked on the current BG....so hooked, in fact, that my newest cat is named Starbuck (she'd climbed too far up in a tree and couldn't get down....so I had to climb up and get her!....yeah....she's a cocky little thing...much like her namesake.)

I love and hate the pacing. I love the cinematography and how well its written. Good characterization and drama.
