Well, I haven't seen Avatar yet, but I've seen the word before in reference to various sci-fi novels. I don't recall encountering the term itself in any other films, though. *shrug*
I'd never encountered the word before and I thought it was measure of how seriously the story doesn't take itself. The stuff might as well have been called macguffinium. I didn't know that it's a thing, and if I didn't then general audiences almost certainly aren't going to. The Wikipedia article linked above even says "often applied flippantly or humorously".
I saw it for the effects, which were stunning, and because my wife wanted to see it for unstated reasons. I found the story to be pretty much what its critics claim. Don't see it in 3D if you're acrophobic.
Heights aren't my problem. I fear falling from them but I can be up high with no real issues.
As to the critics claims, not an issue with me. I've seen the story told before in a number of ways, need to rent Battle for Terra soon, and frankly I still appreciate it. What was it someone said? There's really only 15 plotlines in all of human experience??

Is this supposed to be a play on words? Like unobtanium = unattainable.
