Pern

Growing up one of the first scifi, though really more sci/fantasy, series I ever read was The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCafferey. I couldn't get enough of them...even if I only really could find about 3 or 4 books at the time.

Was just wondering, have any of you read these books and what do you think of them?

books, sci/fantasy

I read a few of them when I was trying to cross Doctor Who with the series, but I never finished the project and I never read any of them again.

I grew up on those and have all. I'll even admit to buy the last two her son co-wrote too. Not as good as I remember them being as a kid, but still a fun read.

It's one of my favorite series. There are some bad ones in with the mix, but also some good ones. Especially a couple that aren't part of the 'main' series. The harper hall trilogy, and masterharper book. And I liked the first fall short story collection.

A lot of the ones after they rediscovered their technology ranged from blah to okay. Some were better than others. Master harper was the last one I read, I think. Checking wiki there's been two since.

Interestingly, I think her Pern novels are set in the same universe as a lot of other of her sci-fi books. I really recommend the Sassinak books (sassinak, Death of sleep (one of my favorite books ever), and I think the last one was called generation wars).

The Powers that Be trilogy was also pretty good. I never got around to her ship that sings books before I lost interest in her writing.

I will say the original Pern trilogy was the first set of books I'd ever read with almost explicit sex in them. That mostly got toned down in later books, though was still there in a lot of them

For reasons I can't explain other than being an impulsive teenager who hated her school, I stole "Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern" from my high school's library. Strangely, I never finished reading it. I keep saying I'm going to try it again eventually, but mostly it just sits on my bookshelf forgotten.
