Stars Hollow Wheelhouse
1539 23rd December, 2010
It was closing on five hours since they’d been boarded and Jim was getting annoyed. So maybe a covert team of four SAS soldiers hadn’t been quite enough to stop the rebellion uprise in the Samaru Islands.
Maybe they’d made things worse.
But they’d high tailed out of there as quickly as they could. Apparently not quickly enough since they’d been followed and boarded. The thing that was getting to him the most was that, while Captain Palmer was lying next to him, unconscious with a giant wound to his head, he had no idea where his other two men were.
‘What do you want?’ Jim tried again.
The Samaruan man glanced at him for a moment before turning back to face the sea.
‘This boat won’t make it to Indonesia,’ he continued.
He was hoping if he kept annoying the guy he’d eventually give something away. Unfortunately for him the large Samaruan guy didn’t seem like he was going to crack no matter how much he annoyed him. Jim looked around for the Aussie guy who had interrupted his radio message to the Hammersley, he’d disappeared.
If he hadn’t been in so much trouble he would’ve taken a moment to smile to himself that it was the Hammersley that answered his mayday call. He supposed he had the time to dwell on that fact now, and while he hated being rescued by anyone, there wasn’t much chance of him getting out of the situation they were in by himself.
Especially since his hands were tied tightly behind his back.
These guys had to be some kind of elite military, he hadn’t even noticed them onboard until Captain Palmer had been knocked out behind him and slumped to the ground with a giant bang. That had been when Jim grabbed the radio.
He glanced back at the other SAS Captain. The guy needed medical attention. What he wouldn’t give for the Hammersley to turn up now.
Especially if Kate was still the XO.
He missed her, had missed her over the years, and on occasion he’d even picked up his phone to call her. But he had to keep reminding himself that he’d left her for a reason - he was never going to be her first choice and Jim Roth didn’t want to be anyone’s second choice.
Not even Kate McGregor’s.
He wondered if she’d told Mike Flynn that she was in love with him yet, because he knew there was no chance of Mike ever making the first move. That was up to Kate. And he knew Kate - she was stubborn. It had taken him long enough to convince her they should be together.
Fortunately he never took no for an answer.
‘Navy!’ the large Samaruan suddenly shouted.
The Aussie appeared again from below decks and looked out the window.
‘Good.’
He turned to Jim and kicked him in the jaw for no apparent reason before grabbing his gun from the corner of the room and stepping outside.
The Samaruan guy quickly tied a cloth around Jim's mouth before following his boss onto the deck.
Jim almost smiled to himself as the Hammersley became visible in the doorway, two RHIBs speeding towards them, but he didn’t let himself get too excited.
Something was wrong.
HMAS Hammersley’s RHIB
1545 23rd December, 2010
Kate looked at the boat ahead of them. It didn’t look like much, not exactly the kind of boat she expected a group of SAS soldiers to be travelling around on. But then again she didn’t usually expect to find SAS soldiers on water at all, unless they were being transported by the Navy.
Which in this instance they clearly hadn’t been.
The other RHIB got there first and she willed hers to hurry up, she needed to know if Jim was OK. She watched as Dutchy and 2Dads boarded the boat, weapons raised. As far as she could see there were four men on the other boat, all of them with rather large weapons.
What seemed like minutes later, but was probably more like seconds, her RHIB reached the boat and she jumped aboard, raising her weapon at the closest assailant.
‘Australian Navy, put the weapons down,’ she shouted.
The largest of the guys, a Samaruan with dreadlocks, tilted his head at her and smiled. That annoyed her.
‘Who’s the master of this vessel?’ she continued, looking around for any sign of the SAS guys.
‘I am,’ an Australian accent replied to her.
She looked at the guy who stepped out in front of her. He didn’t seem like the kind of guy to be boarding boats occupied by SAS soldiers. Although, she reminded herself, last time there’d been trouble in the Samaru Islands it was Ray Walsman who’d been causing it. There was something about this guy that reminded her of Ray Walsman - a little more rough around the edges though.
The man waved at the others to lower their weapons. They complied.
Dutchy glanced at her. She knew it was a question, did they follow suit? She shook her head slightly enough that no one but him would notice.
‘How can we help you?’ the Aussie man asked.
Kate didn’t let her weapon drop either, there was something about this guy that unnerved her. ‘We had a mayday call from what appeared to be this vessel about four hours ago.’
The guy smiled and looked at the large Samaruan guy again. He was still smiling in that irritating way. Like he knew something she didn’t.
‘That wasn’t us, you must have confused us with - ‘
He was cut off by a muffled shout from the wheelhouse.
The Samaruan guy’s weapon was instantly back in the air, pointing their direction. The Aussie pulled a handgun from his waist and leveled it at them too.
‘Watch him, Dutchy,’ Kate commented.
‘Yes, ma’am,’ Dutchy responded.
She edged closer to the wheelhouse and stepped inside, never letting her eyes wander from the Aussie guy.
She wasn’t exactly sure what she expected to find, and she had to admit her heart almost skipped a beat as she noticed Jim bloodied and tied up but very much alive. The guy next to him didn’t look so good.
‘Swain!’ she called as she knelt down next to Jim. ‘Are you OK?’
He smiled. ‘Good to see you, Kate.’
She almost didn’t notice Swain coming into the wheelhouse. She’d completely forgotten how endearing Jim's smile was, how his eyes had that way of sparkling when he looked at her.
It had been a long time since anyone had looked at her like that.
‘Could be under better circumstances,’ she smiled in return, pulling out her knife and hacking away at the ropes that held his hands together.
She turned back to look at Swain.
‘How is he?’
‘Doesn’t look good, ma’am,’ he grimaced and avoided looking at her. ‘We should get him back to the Hammersley.’
‘These guys are well trained,’ Jim warned. ‘I didn’t even hear them come on board.’
‘What do they want?’ Kate replied.
‘No idea,’ he said quietly, standing up.
She didn’t miss how he placed a hand on her arm for balance, although she knew it was unlikely he needed it. Last time she’d checked Jim had pretty good sea legs. Not that she was complaining, but his touch on her clothed arm sent a shiver through her spine.
How had she let him go so easily? Jim was the kind of guy who was definitely worth fighting for.
She pulled her arm away from Jim's touch and turned to look at Swain - this wasn’t the time to dwell. She opened her mouth to speak when she was interrupted by gunfire from outside the wheelhouse.
