Gone.

She finds herself sitting on her bed, the telescope sitting next to the window in front of her. He’s only been gone less than half a day and she doesn’t want to look through it yet. She knows if she starts now she won’t stop.

She saw the look in Charlie’s eyes, the one that betrayed exactly how he felt. And she’d felt those emotions herself.

Proud.

She was proud of him, glad he had done this, proved to himself and to everyone that it was possible. Larry was a strange man, but he was a very capable one, and not just in matters of the mind, but if it called for him to be strong physically he could do that too.

Happy.

Seeing Larry fulfil his dream made her happy, because she knew how happy he was about it. Going into space was something she knew Larry had dreamt of since a child. But somehow that didn’t stop her from feeling the other emotion.

Sad.

She was trying not to worry, but she hadn’t been able to stop feeling like she’d lost something. It was stupid, he was only going to be gone for six months, but when she remembered how much things had changed in the previous six months it made her realise that could be a very long time.

She was torn between her will to have him near her, easy to access all the time, and between wanting him to live his dream. She knew that for him the latter was more important, because he had spent his life working to that moment. And no matter how much she loved him she had to deal with that.

Slowly.

She stood up and walked to the window, staring up at the sky. Larry had left her a website that informed her of exactly when the International Space Station would pass her house. She looked at her watch and then up at the sky.

It took her a few moments before she spotted the small dot passing across the sky, moving quickly between the other lights. She smiled. He was up there, somewhere, and she knew that he would be looking down at her.

Smiling.

She raised a hand and waved slightly, feeling the tears prick her eyes. She’d never expected herself to be in this situation, but somehow it felt like she should be. She didn’t know anyone else she could be with, that she’d bother waving to when he was just a speck in the night sky.

But she did it because she knew he would be standing up there waving back at her.

Trust.
