It was a TV show and movie (Serenity) by Joss Whedon (of Buffy fame). It was (unrightfully) cancelled after one season. It has a Wild West feel, but it's set 500 years from now after a diaspora to different planet. There's a good dash of futuristic sci-fi, as well as Chinese culture.

Basically, it's about a group of thieves/smugglers/general no accounts who, of course, are lead by a hopelessly noble war hero (from the losing side). There's also an evil government plot with bonus psionics.

It's really difficult to explain properly, because it's so complicated, but it all works together really well to form this really cohesive universe. I highly recommend it.
