Self-employed, not unemployed

It's weird not going into an office every day, or having a steady paycheck, but I have to say, I really don't miss dealing with the office politics and general BS that goes on in my (former) division. My manager and the creative director, with whom I worked closely, were both freaking out last week about the safety of their own jobs and also ( Read more... )

Very excited for you! Change is scary, but it sounds like you have a lot of opportunities to grow during this time. I look forward to checking my friends list one day, and seeing that you're getting published!

I used to be in a band and worked in a warehouse. When the band broke up, I became warehouse manager. Then the big financial crisis happened, and corporate shut down our facility and laid everyone off. It was the -best- thing that ever happened to me. I had kept trying to go to school (tuition reimbursement, they said!) but never had the chance due to my schedule. As I enter my senior year in college this fall, I am SO thankful I got laid off, because otherwise I know I would probably still be in that damn warehouse.

I love hearing stories like yours! That's so awesome. Way to turn something that could've been terrible into a triumph. Seriously, bad things can sometimes be blessings in disguise!

You sound so productive! My year of unemployment was pretty enjoyable all in all. Even though my former job had been something I had tired of, it still stung when I was let go. But after a few weeks I got over it, and I settled into a nice routine where I got ample sleep and exercised every day. I was also able to get a project off the ground that I may not have otherwise. Love that you are taking this time to write.

I'm hoping to settle into a nice routine like that! I'm having a little trouble with the ample sleep thing...turns out I really like it! I love taking naps, and now nothing's stopping me, but that means I end up staying up late, which leads to sleeping in, and the cycle just keeps repeating itself. Rome wasn't built in a day, I guess...
