You would think that being in possession of the only hair salon in a community of around four hundred people would guarantee a lot of business, but apparently the ease of island life precludes the desire for regular hair cuts, even when they're offered for free. Not that Shane doesn't stay plenty busy, but there's never been more business than she and Joe can handle, and most evenings are exactly like this one: No appointments and no walk-ins, everyone gone to eat or home for the night, and Shane puttering around alone as she cleans up.
Sound seems like it travels faster on the island, maybe due to the lack of background noise; there's no honking of car horns or distant chatter of TV sets. Shane's sweeping out the last of the day's hair when she hears the unmistakable approach of footsteps and pauses, watching the door.
