Author's Note: Written for comment_fic's Author's choice, author's choice, driving through empty towns in the small hours, with only the light of the sodium lamps, and graveyard shift radio. Inspired somewhat by the essay "On the Road to Jefferson", in the anthology.

It's based partly off a horror-fantasy novella in a collection of connected short stories and novellas by Caitlin R. Kiernan,, and partly off the author's essay about the very weird things that inspired her to write it. A friend of mine got me on to it and I've found it utterly inspiring (mostly because the bulk of the horror is hinted at rather than shown, which makes it creepier, plus, the author leaves some elements tantalizingly unexplained).
