I'd argue that heaping bowlful of historical literature would be just as helpful.

It's easy to find the broad parallels in our world today (the end of Pax Americana and its similarity to Marcus Aurelius' end to Pax Romana, a corrupt senate, wealthy families jockeying for the coveted seat of power), but what about what happened after Rome splintered?

Are we facing Balkanization? Is another dark age looming? Will this civilization be remembered as one that touched the heavens, only to be dragged back to Earth because of its own hubris?

Add in the looming reality of a shift in global energy production, and a hard read of the fall of civilizations due to a loss of a precious resource might not be a bad idea.

So look ahead, but also understand how we arrived here in the first place.
