As far as Piano Man goes, that's a good choice. I like your interpretation of Paul, I had just assumed he wanted to marry a woman but was never able to make it work, but there could be another reason. As for the waitress, I thought her practicing politics could possibly be a way of saying "working on patrons and trying to get better tips".

The interpretation of the song literally just occurred to me a few months ago, and now it's a case of "can't unsee the slash." I'd used to assume the same thing. And now no. As for the waitress, I'd always pictured her as someone who saw herself as there temporarily, honing her talking skills because some day, she was going to Be Someone. (I have an ungodly amount of meta in my head about this song, going back decades. Srsly.)

You could be right about the waitress. I'm kinda the same way with songs. I'm sure that since this is partially based on a true story, Billy Joel probably explained the whole thing somewhere.
