Decade In Review, lazy-style

Dec 31, 2009 19:26

Like so many others, I can't be bothered to do a decade-in-review, which is good because I wouldn't be able to remember anything anyway. Fortunately Dave Barry has already reviewed the decade for us, year by year! Mostly. Except for 2001, which even he had a hard time putting a wacky spin on, and 2002 which I couldn't find bizarrely, the only place I could find this one hosted, perhaps due to Google apparently deciding that 2002 = 2009, or perhaps due to its inclusion of the phrase "buttpuckering terror", was at FreeRepublic, which I shudder even to link to but do so for completeness' sake). Of course, it's all a bit US-centric, but Canada is so inundated by US media that it feels mostly applicable anyway. Apologies to any of you barbarians out there in the rest of the world.

I know some people would rather chew a big ball of tinfoil than read Dave Barry, but it's still kind of interesting to skim back over what seemed to be such major characters and events of the day but are now mostly forgotten. Which brings us to...

2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009.

I think 2008 was the best of the lot, but that might just be because it was the first one I ever saw, so his formula didn't seem quite so formulaic at the time and maybe the positive impression stuck. Also the bit about Sarah Palin naming her kids after random nouns such as "Hamper".

Part of the formula too, of course, is making a wry comment at the end about how miserable the past year has been and how the next one can hardly help but be better than the last. Considered together, this is not an encouraging pattern, and yet we continue to live in hope because the alternative just sucks too much. So, here's hoping.

Happy New Year everyone, and may it be better than the last. For all our sakes!

time marches on
