damn our ideal of "beauty"

last night i saw a teenage girl, 17. suicidal because she couldn't stand to look at herself in the mirror.
to her, she was too fat.
she was a cutter. along with multiple cuts on both arms were the words:
"ugly" and "fat" carved into her belly.

the answer to this question sucks...
i told her that it broke my heart.

then i put her on a 72hr legal hold and transferred her to an inpatient psych unit. that's what she came in looking for, but it doesn't make it sound less cold.

i'd like to have answered: i assumed the role of her parents and every guy that's ever looked at her and would ever look at her and told her she was beautiful and she believed me.

someone told me this kind of self loathing is unknown in other cultures. that there's a significant correlation between GNP and this behavior (I know I'm conflating sovereign nations with cultures). maybe what this girl thinks of herself is an unforseen consequence of America's affluence?

it is still horrible but perhaps the silver lining here is that she could only think this about herself if she wasn't worried about clean water. she can read, right? would she do that if she was illiterate?
