As you may have guessed, I just got back from watching Tim Burton's version of 'Alice In Wonderland'. I have to say I wasn't impressed. When you're a child and read a story, you envision it a certain way. There's a certain beauty in the way you envision things as a child. Tim Burton took that away, at least for me. Everything was just so grim. And

I thought of that quote as I was trying to understand what Burton was interpreting when reading the book and creating the film ;)

I can't say much about the movie itself because I have no interest in seeing it. I've seen the trailers and that's more than enough for me to know it's not the Wonderland I've envisioned for years. And I wasn't keen on the animated when I was a kid either, so yeah.
For me, the one and only Alice in Wonderland thing I've liked was a Disney show from the early 90's called Adventures in Wonderland. It's on You Tube if you're interested. Very lighthearted - very Disney (in its 90's prime), but live action and what I absolutely HAD to see as I got ready for school back in the third grade. To this day nothing else has compared. Don't know why *shrug*

I haven't read any reviews of the movie because I've already heard that they're poor, but I think I might now - I'm curious that no one even mentions as a good or bad thing Alice's heroic turn. That was my favorite part of the movie, it made me wish this movie had been made when I was a kid (plus the seafaring ending reminded me of Avi's True Confessions Of Charlotte Doyle, another heroic girl book).
Charles Dodgson was not "stoned out of his mind" when he wrote the story, but I think it's funny that you say that he was on drugs then say that the movie based on his story should have been more child friendly. Sorry, that just rubbed me the wrong way, a lot of cruel untrue things have been said about that man.
Anyway. Can't like everything : ) At least you gave it a shot.
