Crowds are constant, stars keep changing for 'Wicked'

Here's news from two Cleveland-area musicals that are selling better than 3-in-1 oil at a Tin Man convention in a monsoon.

At "Wicked," which continues to play to near-capacity audiences in the State Theatre at Playhouse Square through Sunday, July 9, the stars have missed some performances because of illnesses, and one won't sing the entire final week.

On Saturday night, Kendra Kassebaum, who plays the ditzy blond Glinda with glee, was absent for the entire show.

Understudy Annaleigh Ashford replaced her. Kassebaum, whose illness was unspecified, returned Sunday.

More dramatically, Julia Murney, who sings the daylights (and the nighttime) out of green girl Elphaba, did appear for the first act of the Saturday evening show but did not return for Act 2.

Murney, who suffered from a bronchial malady, also missed Sunday's two performances. She was replaced by her standby, Victoria Matlock.

Both Murney and Kassebaum did appear for the rest of this week and are expected to do so this weekend.

Murney, however, will not sing at all next week, because she'll be on vacation while Matlock sings, Playhouse Square said.

Murney and Kassebaum have Broadway experience -- not true of Matlock and Ashford, according to ibdb.com, the generally reliable Broadway database.
Okay, so at least it wasn't just a matinee thing Sunday - she was sick (maybe a recurance of the laryngitis she had earlier). It does, however, sound good for Saturday so maybe I'll end up lucking out! I won't get my hopes up though just in case. Well, maybe a wee bit ...
