I don't know if he intended it that way, but I've read a couple of reviews which suggest that it is.

Shoshana commented it was the same message as The Wrestler too. Its also about abusing your body and your mind for your craft.

I found it absolutely hysterical. I laughed and laughed. And, it was scary too. It was a perfect blend of high camp and giallo horror. It's like taking Suspiria and mixing it with Carrie and Showgirls, while adding a bit of The Company in for good measure. In the way the old Douglas Sirk movies had its soap and mocked it too, this one is both hilariously bad and horrifically awesome. Such a trash classic.
