There are decisions that are made in split seconds; the fire and passion of the idea consuming any common sense you have left. There are decisions that have to be thought through; slow and methodical as hell, but worth it when you know you got it right.

Then there are those decisions you wish you never had to make. The ones that reveal how heartless ( Read more... )

It takes all of a half second for him to wake up once she's swung herself onto his bed, but in that time she's already put the knife to his throat. He's not a very light sleeper, but even he can snap out of his dreams when he feels a body pressing him down and a knife pressing into his skin. After a moment of adjusting to the dark and shaking the sleep from his head, he turns his attention to his attacker and tries to figure out if he's going to end up poor or dead when this is done. Maybe both.

He stares at her face when he finally realizes who it is, eyes wide at first then narrowing, examining her for some sign or reason. He should have been more careful with her, he supposes, but can you blame him for trusting her too fast? With all their history, with everything they went through together, he didn't expect she'd be someone to watch out for.

"Knowing you, this is about money." His tone is almost as venomous as the look he's giving her. "Then again, maybe I don't know you anymore."

"What can I say?" A shrug ripples through her, jostling the knife every so slightly against his throat. He should remember who's in charge. "Last time we talked gave me a good idea."

He won't turn her in, but it looks like she has no qualms about subjecting him to that fate.

"Bloodwing isn't here to save you?" The last thing she wants is to be mauled by that stupid bird.

A good idea, she calls it. Turning in an old friend for a couple bucks, after he expressly told her he would never do such a thing to her, is what she would call 'a good idea'.

Some things, it seems, do change.

"What, you looking to turn him in too?" He doesn't bother answering her question. She'd discover the truth if he lied, and he's not in the mood for such games right now. He's too busy wondering if looks really can kill. "This is fuckin' low, Lily. Even for you."

He's done some bad things for money in the past. Maybe things worse than this. But turning in an old friend? That's not something that flies in his books.

"Even for me?" She snorts at the suggestion. Either he's remembering things wrong or he's living with the rosiest kind of nostalgia she's ever encountered. She's never done one thing, not one, that didn't serve her own interests.

What is he, but some guy she knew a decade ago?

"You said it yourself. Atlas. They're trouble. So what are they after you for?"

It's infuriating, how he stays perfectly calm, perfectly still, entirely vulnerable. He should be afraid of her...instead he's judging her with the same arrogant bullshit he pulled when they were teens.
