Trickle-down interspecies language acquisition

I was in the yard with the dogs yesterday, wetting down my tire garden, checking for any squashes that might be hiding, and generally puttering. Part of the puttering was pulling clumps of loose, shedding fur off of Wilbur. He's half Chow Chow and has thick fur that has him looking like a patchily-shorn ginger sheep all summer. He doesn't like me

That he understands I'm trying to communicate something and that he'll wait to see if I can find a way to get it across to him is pretty huge. He's open to communicating, or at least letting me try to communicate.
