Rereading Lois McMaster Bujold, with earworms

Jun 29, 2015 09:20

My current Box-O-Books brought home for rereading includes all of Bujold's that I have in paperback, which means the whole Vorkosigan saga except Cryoburn and Capt. Vorpatril's Alliance, plus the Chalion books and The Spirit Ring.

I started the V-verse saga actually with Falling Free, which I can remember reading originally when it was serialized ( Read more... )

"Falling Free" does earworm me with Tom Smith's song of the same name, from his album "Plugged". But then, I was a backup singer on that track. :)

If I have that particular album of Tom's it is in the cassette format, which means it is in Storage at present. In any event, I don't recall that song; *is* it based on Bujold's story or does it just share the title?

Oh, it's very much based on the novel. :)

Been there, listened to it. Obviously from the same corner of Tom's brain as produced "A Boy and His Frog".

And if Tom's tune is too complicated for a single voice to manage, I realized about halfway through that most of it also scans to Cat Faber's "Acts of Creation".

I can't recall having heard Aral's Nightmare but the idea makes me shudder.

I'm not sure I like Miles until he becomes more mature in the last few books, but he's certainly fun to watch.

Yeah, that's the "horrified fascination" part.

ISTR The song was published in the GaFilk songbook the year Bujold was the Super Secret Guest. Which means it is *also* currently in Storage...

Yeah. There are a couple of the younger-Miles books I haven't read, and now that I'm used to the mature version I'm not sure I want to try.

Interestingly, I have the same problem about Curse of Chalion. Someone lent me Paladin of Souls, and now I don't really want to read about those characters being younger.

Those books are in the same box as the Vorkosigan lot so I'll be re-reading them before I take the box back to Storage. ISTR from the first read, Paladin of Souls follows-on very shortly after The Curse of Chalion so the age difference is minimal.
