Kress was a department store similar to WalMart, Woolworths or Kmart, a "5 and 10" store, but 100 years ago. We have one here in Tampa, but it has been standing emplty since before I was born.
i went to savannah on a girl scout trip (girl scouts were founded there) in seventh or eigth grade and i fell in love with it. so when i drove down to tampa i made sure to stop there...i love it...it's so beautiful there. and it may be hot, but there is an abundance of shade because of all the old trees and the spanish moss.
thanks for the info on the Kress building. when i visited tampa last summer i wandered around downtown and took pictures of abandoned buildings, including the kress building down there.
wow, that comment was definitely not there when i replied to the one above it, lol.
yea it was clean except for the vandalized aloe plant. but of course i think we were wandering through the better part of town. savannah has its slums just like any town but i still think they are cleaner than other cities.
i've read and seen it. i bought it when i was in savannah. i remember when the movie came out and i didnt know it was a book and i didnt know that it was about savannah. so of course when i realized that i went and bought it. it was great. it made me want to live in savannah that much more. i wonder if any of the characters are still around. i thought it was the coolest thing that The Lady Chablis played herself in the movie.
and you should take a road trip there, it's awesome!

and we didnt even make it all the way around the town
everything closed at 5 so we left soon after that. plus we had parked my car in a random alley and i wasnt too keen on leaving it there in the dark.

Have you seen/read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"? Now that you've been in Savannah, it might give the experience a slight quirk.
