A Mentoring Moment

One of my best, brightest students told me yesterday that he was being pressured into taking a part time job at McDonald's this summer. He's sixteen years old.  In the last 3 years, I've gotten him from "Mary Had a Little Lamb" to playing Khachaturian and Kabalevsky, and I just couldn't fathom the idea of him serving me a burger ( Read more... )

hoo-boy. kiddo might be LUCKY if he gets a job at mickey d's..in the summer? at 16? things were different when you were a kid. this economy is miserable...(and there aren't cd stores any more)..........and people get degrees to work in libraries.

yeah, negative me..but i have a crime-free,smart, literate and wonderful sister- who can't get a job to save her ass.

Good point, but the kid doesn't want to work at McDonalds and hasn't thought to pick up a newspaper. I'm sure that a smart, articulate boy like him can at least get hired to shelve books.
