I ran into the mother of one of my former students at the grocery store the other day. (Teacher's Rulebook #47: Always dress like you're going to work when you go to the grocery store, because that is the main place you run into parents. You know, because they tend not to go to nightclubs.) We chatted for a while, she explained how her son is ( Read more... )

What's the Berkeley school system like? I.e. would it be a good place for you to work?

I am quite impressed that you not only remembered this kid, but also his hobbies, after so many years :D

Don't be that impressed -- I only remembered his mom's first name late last night (as opposed to when I was talking to her almost a week ago).

Berkeley would be a great place for me to work, but I don't think going back to teaching is really in my cards. :)

I am also impressed! Did you ask the Mom if she had had the kid tested for Aspergers? Because that sounds like a pattern.....
I think teachers should be armed with a copy of the DSM IV so they know what to look for, and so they know when they are dealing with something out of the ordinary and more into the diagnosable personality disorders..... (although it's very hard to tell with children....)

No, I don't think the kid had Aspergers. It's just that he moved to a new school in first grade and a new one in high school, probably. On the other hand, I didn't know about Aspergers back then, so who knows. You're right, we need more training in that sort of stuff...

Oh man, can you imagine the mayhem when every third teacher is diagnosing kids with some disorder or another just because they're acting up a little or are "too" quiet?

Uh yeah, I don't know what the answer is there, but it shouldn't be placed on the heads of teachers.
Oooo maybe parents shouldn't be in so much damn denial. (Ob: Becka's experience)
