That's really interesting. It will be fascinating to see what comes of it.

Is the social status of homosexuality in Japan right now like the US was in the '80s, or in another period? Is there any real comparison that can be made?

I don't know if it really compares to the US, since there isn't that oily veneer of hate that overlays the whole issue in the States. People just don't know what to do with it, so they pretend it doesn't exist. Except on TV, of course, but that's TV and things are different there....

It is a bit awkward to share yourself in a situation like that, but also best not to lie. Sounds like you handled it in a subtle way and hopefully the students will handle the information respectfully.
