I'm actually kind of surprised....

I've been reading about the US Airways plane that made a water landing, and as I've been doing so I've been looking for a very specific word ( Read more... )

You are so funny. I'm sure you don't mean to be, but you are. It is amusing to see someone get so worked up over the overuse of the word "miracle. :)

What can I say? I'm an English teacher - words are my business. *smile* Plus I grew up listening to George Carlin. If you want to see someone passionate about language, listen to him.....

You don't mind if the certificated pilot hops in here for a second do ya? Alrighty.

You know what bugs me? The Captain is getting all the credit. It's a two man crew, and for all steps of an emergency water landing to happen this well, it took both of them to bring their A games.

With that said, the flight crew briefs every takeoff, and things like "engine loss before X altitude" is on their. I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm pretty sure the guy's time in gliders isn't applicable to doing a power-off glide to minimum sink rate and minimum controlable airspeed in a 200,000 lbs aircraft.

BTW - I don't care about the use of the word miracle. It's like Baldwin in "Malice". "People go into that chapel, and they pray that their loved one makes it, they are praying to me. I am God." What annoys me is non-aviation talking heads bleating on about aviation stuff. Unless you can explain how Newton and Bernouli make an airplane fly, get off my television. -Soulie(private pilot, aircraft, single engine land).

I agree - not only the pilots but the entire flight crew needs time in the spotlight.

As for the talking heads, they stopped caring about being informed or educated about the story a long time ago. Science reporting has just gone into the toilet in the last couple of decades....
