That's how much a human life is worth, according to the EPA. It's down about a million from five years ago, and in '96 it was about $8 million. The EPA says they've just refined their accounting, but some folks think it's politically motivated - a lower cost-per-life means that certain environmental regulations won't be worth enforcing anymore.

just saw this. very excited. We briefed a senator's staff from a fairly religious state last month and were told "ok, I get it, and he mostly gets it, but the people who elected him don't. How do we get them to get it?" Our orignial idea (climate change is this year's weather except more frequent and severe) can now be boistered by "well, the Pope says we gotta."
And since the senator's wife let him off the hook regarding hookers because he claimed faith, his voters will hopefully do the same. Sometimes blind faith is a good thing? :)
