I'm flabbergasted it took this long for you to find a Kyoto history book! And you know, it never even occurred to me what might have been there before -- everything I've ever read just referred to when it was established, and goes on from there.
I know - this is a great patch of land, so I figured there had to have been someone here before Kammu came in, but no one could tell me who it was or what the area was called. And yeah, it is surprising that it took this long to find a history book. The Kyoto-in-English genre seems dominated by travel guides rather than history....

As the author I have to say your comments were very pleasing and just the kind of thing that makes writing worthwhile. The fact that I stumbled upon your page quite inadvertently made it even more of a treasure. I have to entirely agree with your remarks about the dearth of Kyoto history books as compared to the wealth of guide books. The only material I came across in English was long out of print, which meant quite a lot of traipsing around Kyoto to collect the relevant information - but who could possibly complain about that. I see from your photos you are an avid visitor of some of Kyoto's finest places too... and as for seeing Kyoto afresh, that is exactly what happened to me while doing the research for the book. As one becomes aware of the layers of history embedded beneath the streets and gardens of the city, one comes to an ever-increasing awareness of what a remarkable city it is. We are indeed lucky to live here, and I am glad you found your way to my page. I must confess to a "Wow!" moment - comments from authors are rare and cause for some excitement.
