JESUS, Mary and Joseph... (More QAF ramblings)

Apr 01, 2005 18:38

I was watching QAF 201, and didn't get to the stop button immediately after the last scene, which is devastated Brian driving away after he's agreed never to see Justin again, because his mother thinks it's the best thing for Justin. Which means I actually heard the first part of the song they put over the end credits. Which starts out, "I died ( Read more... )

You know, you're making me consider giving QAF another chance. (I own the S1 DVDs. I hated them, but I watched them with the Evil Ex, and given that she made me hate Giles, Krycek, and Ray Vecchio, I think it's safe to say that she just sucks the joy out of everything. *g*) I have the DVDs in a pile to sell, but maybe I should rewatch them first.

Oh, HONEY. Watch the last chapter of 122. (Or, from the scarfing scene, whichever is earliest) Wait, no, you need to see the gut-punched look in 119, when Justin takes Brian's trick right out from under his nose and leads him to the back room. That look, my GOD, that look. Shocked, and like somebody has just reached inside his chest and scooped out everything. With a spoon.

He gets that look a couple of other times, too. One is when he asks his dad, if you weren't cut out to be a family man, why did you and Mom have me? And Jack gives him an incredulous look. "Jesus, you're a smart boy, you mean you never figured it out?" And there goes the chest. Those looks rank right up there with Brendan Fraser wrapping his chest in barbed wire and pulling it tight in THE PASSION OF DARKLY NOON.

And aieee! hating Vecchio? Nonononono! That's just SO WRONG. Have you got any of the Ray-love back? I hope?

I need to see this, yeah. I vaguely remember the series; it's been at least two years since I've seen it, though. I haven't taken the DVDs out of the case since I moved here, and that's two years next month.

I definitely think I'll be rewatching them instead of taking them to the used CD/DVD place.

And yeah, I got the Ray-love back. I got a lot of things back, the past two years. The Ray-love, the confidence, the sanity....

But DAMN, what the fuck happened to Justin's brain toward the end of S2????? Because, hello, "It's what he doesn't say," that's important, so why did he forget that? Stupid twinkie twat...

I'm waiting on my S4 DVDs, but having seen them in WMV, I gotta say, there was a HUGE suck factor to the season.

"Stupid twinkie twat"--love that. *g* But I keep telling myself: he was nineteen. We're pretty much all stupid at nineteen.

Yeah. I could happily have accepted the series ending with S3. That would have been some sweet, with the future a rosy and promising haze, despite Brian's job loss etc etc. (Or at least nicely open-ended.)

Holy FUCK. If there had been any tiny smidge of doubt in my mind that Brian really loved the kid, that would have squashed it to atoms.

How could there be any remaining doubt, when he'd just told Jennifer he "cared about" Justin? I think that's probably still the most remarkable thing he's said on the subject. She knew damn well what it meant. (That scene is totally, um, "appropriated" from the foreswearing scene from Camille, which I've always found sadder than the death scene.)

Because "care about him" leaves wiggle room. It's too flexible, and people who are determined not to see a B/J 'ship can make it mean what they want it to mean, which is not "love." Or maybe because some people are afraid to let it mean "love" because they've been smacked down by canon in other 'ships so often that hope is painful.

Of course, you just have to make the "it's all right" argument to demonstrate that Brian habitually underplays the importance of things.

I think that's probably still the most remarkable thing he's said on the subject.

Oh, BABY, yeah. I so love that whole scene, especially when he draws a breath to say something and then...doesn't.

I always wonder how in the fucking HELL any of his friends can call him "heartless" and believe it. Jesus.
