I tried posting this about 2 hours ago, but had issues. I'm hoping it goes more smoothly now.

Many members of the the librarything community post end of year reading polls and I always enjoy participating and being amused by the results. If you've ever read any of these books, please check them off ( Read more... )

I see "Ooku" on everyone's read-lists :o Is it interesting?
Also, would you recommend "Wicked"?

Personally, I didn't enjoy Wicked very much. To be fair, I also didn't enjoy his Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister very much, either. This was my attempt to give the author a second chance and I really feel like he fell short. The concept was a good one, but something in the execution missed the mark for me. Not the prose, but just something in the construction of the story. It is, however, insanely popular, so you might want to take my opinion with a grain of salt.

As for Ooku I absolutely love it. Broadly, it's historical fiction that examines what Japanese history might be like if gender roles were reversed. More specifically, it's excellent, character focused, genderswapped court drama. I really look forward to each new volume.

I asked because I like the musical, but I haven't read the Wicked book.

Ooku does sound interesting! I'll keep an eye out for it, I haven't seen it here yet :)

Everybody I've spoken with who is familiar with both versions of Wicked says that the play 'fixes' what's wrong with the book, especially the ending. For my part, I spent the book trying to figure out how it could possibly be a musical, let alone one that people adore.

I wish I could say that it's great, but it's a book for younger children so I'm going to go with cute. It's definitely cute.
