just a thought - if you DO decide you'd like to start playing with others again, in an orchestral context - i costumed for the mit gilbert and sullivan players twice (http://web.mit.edu/gsp) and they're really the nicest bunch of folks (plus gilbert & sullivan is fun!). their orchestras i believe are generally volunteer, just as the rest of their crew is. they do three shows a year, usually, and they accept people who are not affiliated with MIT. just a thought!
