Those evil ugly greys, eating our lovely rusty bushy-tails out of house and home. There were loads of reds in Galway when I was a little one, but they're all gone now. It's terribly sad.
Really? So you've actually seen it happen? I guess Galway still must be pretty wild, then, as i believe it started in Britain much earlier. Its not the grays fault, they're just animals (& I'm afraid, coming from the Southern Hemisphere where there are no squirrels, any squirrel excites me a lot) but they have to be killed for the reds not to be wiped out completely. Grim. Here..unrelatedly.. is... a...chipmunk
The greys were introduced to the grounds of stately homes in Leinster (the eastern province) under 200 years ago. Only the red squirrel was native here. So yeah, I suppose it's not the grey squirrels' fault (even though they are big ugly bullies who destroy saplings by eating all their bark, which the lovely snuffly pretty little red ones never do), it's posh Leinster peoples' fault. Baxtards.
wow- I love a bit of history, I do. So it was one of those stupid ideas then, like introducing possums (Aussie) to NZ (totally different ecological system), then they eat all teh bird habitat, and their eggs, verry bad. Of course, they are doing things to combat this now, but what an enormous damage. I don't hate posums, they're cute, but they have to be turned into mittens for the sake of the poor ol birdies. The red squirrels are the underdog- I'm tootin' for 'em. How could I not. I'm small red & snuffly too. (snuffles) Heeeeeeeres Bernard.....
