I think most people are uncomfortable with knowing that sort of thing, mostly because it makes them feel obligated. Do you need to let them know? You could just put something blanket and non-scary out there, like "if you need help, let me know" always goes over well. :)
Yeah...putting it out there is really weird. My mom emailed me a story about the way my Grandmother handled a situation like that...and it was really heartwarming and touching to understand that generations of people have struggled with this kind of thing and that friendships are not always easy to navigate.
I think to truth outs itself, generally through actions. If you care, it shows...it must, and even if it gets uncomfortable at times...if people are good people...then it's ok. Then really they get that sincerity can be more awkward than phony sentiment...but that in spite of that (and maybe because of it) it's much, much, better.
