Organic Box Questions

Apr 28, 2006 20:38

We got this organic box on Wednesday, and in it was this fruit that no-one could seem to identify. Can you help? I am sorry about the crappy quality of the photos, if they are worse than useless the general feel of the thing is 'fleshy hand grenade'.

Experiementing with strange veg can often lead to trouble - it was years before I learned that strictly speaking Butternut Squashes should be cooked rather than eaten raw...

Looks like an alphonse mango maybe? They are in season now in the local Bangladeshi shops...

And as for celeriac - you can use it with potato to make mash (tho it can be a bit watery if you use it on its own), grate it raw for a remoulade with a mustardy mayonnaise, raw in salads, celeriac soup, I did a reasonably successful celeriac gratin with a tomato sauce and parmesan on the top; it can also be roasted but I don't think that's necessarily the best thing to do with it...

Ha! I knew it was a fruit. Himself was convinced it was a smaller kind of squash...

We made a roast tonight, by the way, with which we had celeriac mash -thanks for the tips, I'm sure it's going to be a feature in these boxes if it's in season!

If it turns up again, I'd soup the celeriac -

- sweat an onion and a lot of garlic until soft
- chop celeriac into medium sized cubes
- add stock and boil for ten minutes/until celeriac is tender but still firm
- add some thread noodles to create strange gloopy delight
- sprinkle with parmesan
