A two-hour hop across most of Western Europe lands me at Heathrow Airport. It dawns on me as I hear the stewardesses talk, and see the signs at the airport directing me to the Underground, that I've had a terrible disability miraculously cured: I can read! I can ask silly questions, and understand the answers! How sweet it is to arrive in a country ( Read more... )

whadaya know, happy wanderer

"The sandwich is fine, but it's the first time I've tasted coffee that actually tastes like dishwater. Italy has spoiled me for coffee too, it seems."

Not really, The UK still has coffee issues. Its possible to get a decent coffee, you just need to search for it.

Cheers. I sorta figured as much, but I had limited coffee-seeking time. :)

So what did you think of the British Museum?

Loved the horse armour at the Tower of London.

Nice to hear that someone else has a brother that is as hard to talk to as a potted plant. Although, mine seems to be improving.

Thinking back, my brother was more talkative than he had been in a while. That's a good thing, I think.
I sorta felt lost in the British Museum. I loved the statues of the various Ceazars(sp?); if they were stylised representations rather than true portraits, they were very cleverly done. They really looked like real people. Something that few statues do - because most statues depict saints ages dead or idealised prophets or gods. I also saw a display of official seals from Medieval times. But I was just wandering. I wanted to get on a free "highlights" tour, but I waited where I was told they'd meet, and nobody came.

We saw the Elgin Marbles, the Ayssarian collection (my favourites), the Sutton Hoo treasure (I was desparate to see that, and it was worth all that travelling), the Egyptian collections, some of the Greeks and Roman stuff and the Isle of Lewis chessman. We only did one morning and it wasn't enough. We will get there again one day.
