Oh, what a punch to the gut. So many missed opportunities along the way-- and yes, we can understand the worries about finances and the other kids' well-being-- and then finally there are no more choices.

And that poor young man never got what he deserved from anyone.

Though moving to a new position was easier on Sarah, and she rationalized that it was easier on the boy, it seemed like a double betrayal to me. The first was a decision she felt she needed to make. But the second? It just seems cruel. And perhaps had she not emotionally abandoned him, he might not have found himself getting up to stupid things with those other boys and dying for it.

Really well-written, gripping, and utterly heartbreaking.

I will admit I squeed at this. I love your writing sooooo much.

I wanted to show as bad as it is that this wasn't one choice. She cared about him, but she consistently chose herself and her own over him.

So I'm glad that came through

This is a modern day David Copperfield! Heartbreaking, exquisitely written.

Brava!

Oh this was a fine take on the prompt. So painfully heart wrenching. Well Done.
