I am a teenage girl.
I read comics.
That aren't Strangers in Paradise or Sandman.
I haven't read a single word of SiP.
I like superheroes.
I am just as entitled to my "adolescent power fantasy" than the middle-aged men who seem to be the majority of comics fans.

Cut for feminist rage. )

comics anger me, dammit dc

I agree with this post. I'm not as into superhero comics as I used to be, partly because the majority of the women in them (and the movies they've spawned) piss me off. There are some comic books with kickass heroines that I actually like (e.g. David Mack's Kabuki comics), but they're hardly mainstream or anything.

They're not superhero comics, either, and that annoys me. Currently I read more fanfiction than I do actual comics, just to get my power fantasy fix.

Anyway. I found this by googling something comic-related (I think it was "OTP fanfiction" or something) and had to comment.

If you're interested in feminism in mainstream comics, you should definitely check out Girl Wonder. It's a pretty new site, but there're all sorts of interesting articles and suchlike. (The "Girls Read Comics" blog there pretty much inspired me to rant about comics here.)

And "Look! Batwoman's a lesbian!" isn't gonna cut it, unless she gets her own series, written by a woman, in which she is taken seriously as a character.)

Last I heard, there was a Batwoman book being planned, and the writer was supposed to be Devin Grayson.

Which pleases me, because I like Devin, but you might not.

I had heard that, yes. But shortly before I made that post, I had read somewhere (...and now I forget where...) that someone high-up at DC (possibly Didio?) had said that there was no Batwoman book planned after all.

I really hope that Devin does write it, though. That is a book I would definitely buy.

Actually she showed up again in a Teen Titans / Outsiders annual or secret files or one of those things. It was a short story with Todd Nauck art (very rushed art though) where Cissie visits Wondergirl and for reasons only comic-logic can explains a pair of villains attack. She is pretty much still in continuity, I guess, but I don't think there are many hopes of seeing her coming back any time soon.

Ah, but this is the New Earth, and something tells me Young Justice and everything it included no longer counts. (But I will have to track that down, thank you. Cissie really is/was one of my favourite characters.)
