I think it's interesting you mention DitF, because the dead-young-soldier trope actually dates, in 'modern' pop culture, from around the time of the Arthurian legends (it was in ancient Greece and Rome, but not so much between them and Arthurian-era stuff). Myths, man, how do they work?
Also, I always looooooooved that pro-choice story so much. It was so much more satisfying than the variants where the woman has to love the ugly man to break the spell. Of course, those variants are the stories that get made into movies now, grumble.
Eugh, seriously. And even when they made a movie of Howl's Moving Castle, they made her mostly look like a young girl with gray hair. (...And I totally just realised HMC is/i> this story. Myths again!)
