Jaded woman at the back door / On the first floor / You can't get a hold on me

Oh, my poor bike. I hit a pothole at 60km/h a couple of weeks ago. I'm fine, but my front wheel will never be the same again, and needed to be replaced straight up.

Fortuitously, I happened upon a (hitherto unknown to me) bike store the other day advertising specializing in ten speeds. The proprietor is a curmudgeonly old fellow in his 60s or so who claims he's seen it all and had no trouble at all with the idea of giving my "vintage" machine a thorough workout.

This delights me, since nobody else in town seems to know what to do with it. I have some clue, but not the appropriate tools. The shops have the needed tools, but not the expertise. And nobody has parts. So I've been babying it along for years with whatever parts I could scrounge up or coerce into fitting. Every once in a while I take it into a shop, but I always end up unhappy, as none of the kids know what to do with a 30-year old ten speed, and wind up being almost as much hindrance as help.

So anyway. Yeah. High hopes for this guy. I'd been half considering taking it to Dutch's in Regina (if he's even still around), who was able to work many miracles on my previous ten speed that I rode across Canada. Now maybe I don't have to. Fingers crossed.

On my way back to work, I stopped by Riley Park for a couple of hours to catch the second innings of a 50-overs cricket match. I keep meaning to investigate the Calgary and District Cricket League - I really would like to see if I could sign up with a team and start playing.

It's nice that the snow has finally mostly melted.

Wonderful day. So nice not to have a blasted climb to organize. I should do this more often.

...and now to go watch Vancouver beat up on the Preddies!

cricket, no cat, calgary, biking
