Sweet. Once you get used to SPD you should take a look at Shimano's sandles. They rock in that Iowa heat! I didn't even know you rode. What type of riding are you getting into?
I'm not sure what you would call the type of riding we do. It fits somewhere between casual and distance riding. We pretty regularly do 20 miles, and just yesterday afternoon did 40 miles with some fairly nasty hills. We're trying to get ready for RAGBRAI next month; I'm doing a day, and my coworker TJ is doing a handful of days.
The salesman started off recommending sandals, but I can't really go that route. My feet were very badly burned when I was little, so my feet abrade very easily unless I can maximize the contact area. It's even a problem with normal sandals; the only kind I can wear are ones like this. The shoes I bought seem to breath pretty well, so I'm not too worried.
20 miles is a good distance. You probably ride more than my sister and she is on her fourth complete RAGBRAI. Have fun on the ride this year. I already miss it and it has yet to start. This will be only my second time I have missed it since 1996.
