I did always wonder why we didn't get an eclipse of the moon on a more regular basis. Why it's hotter in summer even though we're farther away I did figure out though, through a cool demo my Girl Scout leader did in High School. When you're tilted towards the sun, the sun's rays are more concentrated, but when you are tilted away, they are more spread out (picture a dim flashlight shining on a globe in the dark.) That matters more than the actual distance away from the globe the flashlight is.
