Goodbye, old friend....

My dearest TiVo died a few days ago... it had been with me for many years, and it was just its time. Still, I'm taking a moment to mourn my old friend - you served me well, series 1 TiVo. May you rest in peace.

Okay. Moment's over. Technology must progress. Anyone out there running a MythTV setup?

I just went to the mythtv url and it does seem rather spiffy...

have you any idea how captions/subtitles (besides those in foreign languages, of course) would work on it? Since I'm hard-of-hearing, I think the majority of net programs are off-limits.

I did a little research and it appears that it does support captions. Apparently the captions are stored as part of the video data in the MPEG-2 files. There may be some limitations - I'm not certain. For one thing, most setups use hardware encoders to generate the MPEG-2 format (which means you can use a lower powered CPU, since it doesn't have to do it). So the capture cards you use would need to support captions... I'm planning on using two Hauppauge cards (a PVR-150 and PVR-350), which seem to be the most popular. Once I get my system online I'll be able to give you more details as to how it works. I'm guessing it shouldn't be a problem as long as the show transmits captions.

Also, did you get my comment about the love seat? I'm about to give it to charity, but wanted to give anyone who wants it a chance to get it, first.

Ha! We NEVER watched tv because most obviously with two boys under the age of 6 there was nothing to watch but Pooh.

And I think I'm going to die of an overdose of Prison Break, Sex in the City, Six Feet Under and any other series that I didn't get to watch for two years straight.

LOL... In reality, I think I probably cursed at it a whole lot.

Ang is back in town - she's got a lot of studying to do and pre-moving stuff (i.e. 'packing'), but maybe we'll have time for some Angel some time this week...
