Memorial Birthday

Mar 18, 2010 11:16

I have no idea whether my title is an appropriate use of the word "memorial", but I'll use it anyway. rock_bear passed away a couple of years ago, but I still celebrate his birthday as a way of keeping him alive in my memory. I never met Russ in person; but, he was an early "friend" on Live Journal, my first overseas friend. We shared a love of, passion for ( Read more... )

I never got to meet Russ in person, either. I was fortunate, however, to briefly talk to him on the phone once. What a wonderful guy.

Without wanting to sound too melodramatic, Russ was my rock; he would bring me back down to earth whenever I went off on one of my depressions. That was just one facet of his generous nature (although he might perhaps rather you think of him as "Gruff Old Bear"!) And he touched many lives in his passing through this earth. I know I will always miss him.

When we were interacting, I was on the road with "Evita"; there were several short layoff's over a two year period. There were several "What's next?" conversations ... Both of us were looking for the next "gig" ... just bitchin and moanin, dreamin' and hopin' ... Both of us loved the theater, life on the boards more than we could express.

I thought of you when I posted this ... I know how much Russ meant to you ... and you to him. So, today .. we celebrate him!

HUGS!

Count me as another who unfortunately never met Russ in person, but carried out wonderful Gilbert & Sullivan-related conversations with him here on LJ. He is indeed remembered -- and missed.

I started out in G&S in Houston. I've only performed in a couple ... The Gondoliers as Giuseppe and in "The Pirates of Penzance" (the revised Bway approach). I enjoyed both experiences. Russ and I never touched on G&S ... But, I can hear his writing voice in my head telling you what he thought:)

Happy Birthday to our dearly missed LJ friend!

Thanks, Kat ... something's not quite right with a world where we have to celebrate men and women who died too young ... men and women who are younger than us. We should be able to celebrate with them ... across the table ... or on the other end of the phone line.

HUGS!

Good for you! ... we should alll be so fortunate to be kept alive in the memory of dear friends. I never knew Russ, but took a look at his journal, and it exudes playful warmth. It's great that LJ has kept it on, a fitting tribute.
Hugs!

You describe him exactly ... "playful warmth" ... he was touring as a wardrobe supervisor in England when we first started to talk ... We had so many back and forths .. He died so young. *sigh* ...
