New, New, New ... New Definitions!

These selections always make me laugh. I've even come up with one word that I think could make the list - "mentalpause", though it requires changing two letters:) Here are the winners of this year's Washington Post's Mensa Invitational which once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing ( Read more... )

They're all pretty wonderful. Although they weren't formed in the same way, they remind me of a list of neologisms that went around ten years ago, mostly based on the social milieu of the high tech boom.

Things like "ohnosecond," defined as the amount of time it takes to realize you made a big mistake AFTER pressing "send" on a broadcast email.

Or "square-headed girlfriend," defined as a straight guy's monitor.

Or "prairie dogging": when someone in an office full of cubicles expresses surprise loudly and everyone else pops up their head to look.

Or "umfriend": someone you're being introduced to that the person doesn't know how to define their relationship with. "This is my ... um ... friend." ;-)

I especially love "umfriend." And "square-headed gf," yeah.

How about square-headed bf? :) A flat headed surface, so you can sit a refreshing beverage on top while the bf is busy down below?

I like these lists. I know I've seen 7 & 8 on an older list. I'm gonna make a goal to use 2, 4, and 11 in conversations at Starbears this weekend. :-)

I hope you worked them into the conversation today! Having been to Starbears, I'm sure there were examples on display ... and if you took on these roles, that there were bears who found you attractive in new and interesting ways! :)

OMG... I love number 8. It seems to describe so much of my life, especially with co-workers.

Be careful! I can be guilty of that. I'm good at dishing out the sarcasm, but can sometimes be clueless when it's aimed at me. LOL!

I liike #2. I know many of those! Slightly aside from those wondeful words, I always like it when the wrong word is used in conversation, especially when the other person hasn't got any idea that they have the wrong word. I particularly liked it when someone who was well off said that they were effluent!

I think #2 should be added to Webster's Dictionary. It is a particularly apt term, isn't it!? :) I know what you mean about using the wrong word and not knowing ... I find that a lot of people confuse or misuse the words prostrate and prostate. As a nurse, I bet you know the difference:)

I've invented Torostoolation " Announcing, in your blog. many times, that you have had it with Facebook because it is dumb...yet writing at least three Facebook status entries every single day"

LOL! I hope not to live up (or down) to the definition of this term!
