What language is that? It looks like German but I don't recognize those carats as being used in German.

It's "Middle High German"*, spoken from around 1050 - 1500 A.D.

Breaks your tongue and is a pain to write.
But quite fun, unless you have to learn a whole poem like that by heart. >_>

Think Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', just with more gratuitous pencil strokes.
"A knyght ther was, and that a worthy man,
That fro the tyme that he first bigan
To riden out, he loved chivalrie,
Trouthe and honour, fredom and curteisie."

Jeebus, I know it's time for bed when I start quoting Chaucer. >_>

Argh, my translation is awful in places. I should fix it up tomorrow morning.
