After upgrading to a new iMac last October (refurb 20" for $999.00!), I decided to refresh my G5 tower with 10.5. Has been a nightmare. Machine was running fine with 10.4 and has just been sitting unplugged for the last three months. After backing up drive, reformating/partitioning, and doing a clean install, it still randomly brings up the grey "You must restart your computer" screen (in multiple languages). Sigh. I hate computers. Am almost looking forward to going back to work where I get paid to fix 'em.
Oh yeah, definitely recommend Disk Warrior. Even when a drive gets totally borked up and Apple's Disk Utilities can't fix it, Disk Warrior can usually mount it enough for getting files off before re-partitioning it.
