Quincy, M.E. vs. House M.D.

I wonder if today's punk rockers will remember last night's House as "the punk episode," in the same way folks my age remember the Quincy "punk episode." Your comment reminded me of Evan Dorkin's illustrations to the 1994 book Generation Ecch!, where we're trying to get a definition of "Generation X" out of a gaggle of equally clueless twerps. Besides "The Star Wars Generation" ("Where you know who played the third Ughnaut in Empire Strikes Back, but you don't know who your Congressman is"), we get both the Slyly Referential ("A generation that's about as deep as the 'Punk Rock' episode of Quincy M.E"), Self-Referential ("It's that Quincy reference in the last panel"), and Self-Cynical ("It's never having seen that Quincy episode, but referring to it anyway! For $$$$!") Considering our advanced years, now it's time to add Alter Kokker ("It's referring to that Quincy episode and wondering why our grandkids look at us funny!") to the list.

I'm so cool, I saw the Quincy episode when it was on, AND I had no idea what the fuck punk rock was.

Generation X commentary reminds me of the scene in the Divine Comedy, where the damned keep pushing each other down into a river of filth to gain a position of comfort and superiority, if only for a moment.

Which is a fairly "Gen Exy" comment itself with a bit of snotty classicism thrown in.

The CHiPS punk episode was on here the other day. It was even funnier than I remembered.
